BA3 Asset creation: Research Castle designs

Castle research portfolio
In this document I’ll be going over all research that I have gathered in relation to the asset I’m creating which is castle. In this document I’ll be going over the landscape that the castle will be placed on. The main structural layout of the castle and then other athletics to the castle like towers, windows and fortifications. Then I be looking at overall function of the structure and how it would operate hopefully them will have a clear idea of what type of castle but I’ll be constructing for this project along with difference athletics that I will be placing into its final design.

Before looking into different types of castles and different architectural features of those castles and going to look into the landscape in which the castle is placed upon. This is to set the ground work and layout of the castle which is a big factor in structural design of the castle as castles themselves and to be strongholds to hold the same position they often use to rein to their advantage. And I wish to place my Castle upon the side of the cliff this will mean thorough research into different tactical advantages building could have won such an environment.

My first idea I had for my Castle was to have the castle built on the edge of a cliff and show this cliff and I had been weathered by the elements over time. Similar to some of these images.

This type of design of the landscape I find quite interesting as from a defensive point of view it seems to be almost impenetrable. But as the castle I’m designing must have a bridge I will have to bring a design like this more closer to mainland. When looking at the environmental advantages this type of land has it makes for a very easy defend able position as an enemy would only be able to enter from one place the bridge but also has access to water which offers another defense to the castle. As this type of design for a castle is almost impossible in real life I may have figure a way to make the castle realistic within 3-D space may be adding support to help prop up the castle.

This image shows the type of environment that I would like to build my Castle on. I would like to expand this globe who are into many and have them in castle placed upon the biggest and then have smaller outer towers placed on smaller pillars. This however creative problem as the 3-D model is required to have a bridge bring the pillar more closerWhen researching into different Castle designs and styles to use for my project. Came across an design for the platform in which the Castle would stand on as part of the brief says that we are to include a hilltop in which the Castle stands upon. I looked for different and interesting ways that the hilltop requirement of the brief can be betrayed. I came across this image other Castle on alone rock near the edge of a cliff found to be interesting summing may want to incorporate.

The reason I use this original castle is because of its square like structure. And also the ledges upon the top and the way they are constructed along with the Windows running up and down the Castle. I'm certainly going to use a square focused Castle in with my model and I think this fits in with the common construction of castles.

With this Castle example I like the look of the castle towers shown on the left-hand side of the picture. This type of mediaeval design is what makes Castle stand out from all of the buildings and is a vital part of the architecture of a Castle and it is clear that I’ll have to include similar towers to this in my final asset.

As I project and make Castle with a bridge I looked into other Castle designs and bridge designs and it seemed that most mediaeval bridges would be very simple and consists of two or three main pillars with the bridge laying across them.

This castles mean keep and its tower may have funds in disrepair but the form of them is quite interesting. With the keep the lights towards the top of the castle holding the battlements is something that I would like to use as it gives the Castle more of a mediaeval feel. Also a common design with powers similar to the one in this picture is having many different floors of windows throughout the tower as they were commonly used as stairs to go through different levels in the Castle.

Even though this structure is not really a Castle it still has many characteristics of a Castle for example the towers and also the structure towards the back of the house which looks an awful lot like a keep. This is mainly due to the square shape of the building and also its castle like formations for example the different towers and ledges. This really shows the difference between Castle and a prestigious house I really get have to consider this so to make my structure not look like a house or church.

Within these images of this Castle shows the front gate and surrounding wall of a historical Castle. The main things are focused on this image is the two towers either side of the main gate but also the main gate itself. The reasons are focused on this is because how symmetrical the building is and how this is a very common theme within castles that they are almost identical to each other when they are cut down the middle. Another thing I noticed then this image is the gate to the Castle is almost made up of two separate towers that are merged together to form a better defensive position over the only entrance to a Castle. From an architectural view this is an obvious design feature as the date would be the first thing to be attacked in a major conflict. This is a fundamental part of Castle design and is a feature that must be present within any Castle.

With this type Castle is different from the other standard castles in the way that it is designed. As with this Castle the tie was within a structure or more circular than the standard square shape commonly found in mediaeval castles. Also the construction materials of this Castle instead of being solid stone is common with other castles it is made up of multiple stones cemented together this poses an interesting point that Castle does not commonly have to be made of certain material to be considered a Castle.

With this image that shows more of a cross between a Castle and stately home. Some of the characteristics of the Castle for example there are four Towers on every corner of the building there are a square shape along with battlements placed on the roof but I would call this building more like a small for their Castle. Part of this Castle the light like the front entrance to the Castle as it is a tower shape but it is more like a Pentagon or a many sided shape than a square and also has columns running on each of the edges from the top to the bottom of the tower think aesthetically this is a nice touch to tower as it makes it seem more important than to state solid square structure.

There is ledgers to look at this Castle is because of its position on the edge of the cliff and how is built in to the cliff. From a practical point of view this Castle would have been very easy to defend as it would have only been attacked from one which gives the Castle a massive advantage in knowing which direction to focus its defensive efforts. As with our project is to make the Castle and explore into a game engine I still do want my Castle to have a practical purpose and I do like this idea of only holding from one defensible point such as this Castle and also the idea of a Castle on multiple cliffs I find to be a very interesting concept and something that I'm definitely going to use

With these two types of castles though they are both similar in design being square with some pillars along each of the faces of the Castle very simple design this still managed to look mediaeval castle like even though they have a very simple shape. It really shows that for a Castle the simpler shapes can still be used and no mad designs really end up looking like castles.

When it came to bridges I decided to use a very easy design for them similar to the one showing in this picture which is a simple bridge with two with three main supports and archways underneath the bridge. They are very simple and their design these bridges as they were commonly used in mediaeval era and are commonly linked to castles. The is now going to use this design bridge is mainly because of its simplicity but also because it fits into that old-fashioned lock that this bridge and most castles fit into.

These images were taken from scans from books that are used from the University that I go to. These images were from books about England and Scottish castles and reinforce a lot of the design points of castles for example and often square structure with towers on corners and battlements on the top of towers shaped so that people guarding the walls clock very rare but not to be attacked back. When reading this book did reinforce the ideas about Castle structures and most of our my ideas on how one of my Castle to be shown

This concept drawing Castle found to be very interesting as a had a wall perimeter-based around the main keep of the Castle. I like this concept of a wall because impractical use it used as an extra line of defence but also because it extends the perimeter of the Castle and also even looks like part of the Castle in its design as it often just looks like a piece of the castle wall place between two Towers think in my final design I may use a wall similar to this one as it helps to make the Castle Look more believable.

Was the next three images they look at the different positions that Castle could be placed in. The first image is a picture of a castle like structure placed almost within a cave on the side of out practically castles have a big advantage as enemies approaching would have to come up the hill which would deter attackers mostly or tire them out but also because it has back towards this offers protection and also roots of an escape. Do find it interesting this tactical advantage this Castle has in terms of it being so embedded into our but I don’t think this offers much in the way of visual lock as half of the Castle is stuck within rock.
As for the second image this is a similar concept drawing from the Castle from game of thrones. I really like this concept of having a Castle upon multiple pillars that where a cliff mainly because I like the way that the Castle looks more like an extension of the cliff than a building just placed upon it but also because of its practical advantage of being only one way in one way out and also how the Castle can have multiple towers and defensive points on other parts of a cliff.
The third image as a concept drawing of Castle which is almost floating off a cliff but with support placed upon the side of the cliff but almost gives it the illusion that is floating this is another interesting concept of the structure of the Castle but I don’t find this one as appealing as the two other designs as it seems a bit too unrealistic for are Castle which looks like heavy sturdy structure to be almost floating and I don’t think that I would use this design

The reason I am analysing these two images is because they are not in a sense castles they are more like towers with the first image tends to look more like a cross between a tower and keep as characteristics are both such as towards the bottom of this structure is a lot thicker and has different columns running down it but towards the top has similar battlements to a Castle alarming guards and such to view over them
the second image is similar in that it is almost like a crossover between keep and a tower for example this tower is much bigger then more standardised towers but also it features many different windows but still has battlements across the top similar to the will to the ones in the first image.
